Career Advice

Anyone who's interested in pursuing a career in psychobiography, whether as a college professor or as an "independent scholar," is invited to send me an e-mail at acelms@ucdavis.edu. I no longer encourage potential psychobiographers to study with me, because I am on the verge of retirement from my academic position. (I do plan to continue doing psychobiographical research, and writing about how to do it better.) Indeed I have never encouraged anyone to aim for an academic career primarily in psychobiography, since very few psychology departments look for faculty with expertise in that area. But if you're really passionate about becoming a psychobiographer, I can give you some sense of career paths that might enable you to practice this worthy profession at least part-time. And I can suggest several faculty members around the country who can help you prepare for such a career.
